Challenges

Virtru is a software company with over 200 employees that helps organizations control access to sensitive data shared via email, files, and apps. Before Virtru deployed 1Password Device Trust and 1Password Enterprise Password Manager—two parts of the 1Password Extended Access Management platform— the company was looking to solve the following challenges:

  • A lack of visibility into BYOD. Virtru couldn’t embrace BYOD without a way to ensure that personal devices are secure, trusted, and compliant.
  • An inability to block older, insecure devices. Virtru needed to ensure team members weren’t using devices with operating systems that no longer receive security updates.
  • A need to strengthen security without compromising employee trust. Virtru required a tool that employees would embrace on personal devices and not perceive as invasive.
  • Inconsistent processes for storing and sharing credentials. Virtru needed a solution that would make it simple for team members to securely store and share passwords.

Ensuring trusted access from personal and company-issued devices

1Password Extended Access Management has given Virtru the confidence and security capabilities to embrace a BYOD culture. Virtru deployed 1Password Device Trust on all employee devices to ensure only known and trusted hardware can access company resources. Team members are also required to install 1Password Device Trust if they wish to access work apps on their personal devices–a move that seamlessly extends Virtru's security model to BYOD.

As a security company ourselves, 1Password Device Trust just makes sense to fill in the gaps that personal devices add to an organization's IT stack.

Ensuring trusted access from personal and company-issued devices

The rollout went smoothly because, unlike traditional MDM solutions, 1Password Device Trust only looks at specific properties to analyze device posture. “We can’t extract an entire copy of their hard drive or look at their photos,” Munive said. “That gives our employees peace of mind.”

With 1Password Device Trust, Virtru can be sure employee devices have the latest OS updates and security patches installed before accessing internal resources. “It ensures every device accessing our environments is up to snuff with security and software updates,” Munive added.

Unleashed productivity through simple self-remediation

If a device fails a Check, Virtru team members are presented with a clear, simple-to-follow set of step-by-step instructions so they can resolve the issue and continue with their work.

Virtru estimates that self remediation enabled by 1Password Device Trust has reduced the time team members spend resolving device health issues by 50%. The instructions have also reduced support tickets, allowing Virtru’s IT team to focus on other important projects, like maintaining its FedRAMP compliance and achieving other critical security certifications.

1Password Device Trust has given us peace of mind. We don't need a full team of security personnel monitoring every single authentication and ensuring each device is up to date.

Virtru has streamlined the self-remediation process even further by customizing the instructions that appear when a device fails a Check. "It allows the end user to seamlessly and securely gain access after they've been blocked, or if they need their device rechecked," Munive said.

The result? 100% of blocked access requests have been self-remediated by Virtru team members.

Clear insights into managed and unmanaged software

In addition to monitoring and enforcing device security, 1Password provides Virtru a window into the software its empowered and technically savvy workforce uses. The company can then take action and block access to tools that go against its policies.

For example, many AI-powered applications can help team members improve their writing. While powerful, these tools often use employees’ initial drafts to train their underlying AI models, which goes against Virtru’s culture and security philosophy.

"It doesn't jive with our mission," Munive said. "Data privacy is extremely important to us. That's what our product does, after all – it helps people retake control of their data."

We don't want to be reactive—we want to stop security issues before they happen. With 1Password, it’s easier than ever before to do that.

AI writing tools can also increase a company's attack surface and the likelihood that an employee will expose confidential data. To combat this, Virtru uses 1Password Device Trust to check if team members have installed browser extensions related to AI-powered writing tools. If one is detected, Virtru blocks access to sensitive company resources.

"With Device Trust, we can ensure that if employees have one of these extensions installed, they're not allowed to access our internal documents," Munive explained.

Secure access underpinned by strong credentials

Virtru uses 1Password Extended Access Management to ensure seamless, secure access to the tools that employees rely on. 1Password Enterprise Password Manager gives Virtru a secure, centralized place to store and provision login credentials, multi-factor authentication (MFA) codes, and other company secrets. When team members sign in to applications using credentials stored in 1Password, Device Trust checks they’re on a secure, trusted device.

1Password saves people hours per week because they no longer have to ask everyone: 'Hey, what's the password to that account again?

Adopting 1Password has empowered team members to save, use, and securely share strong credentials at work. “1Password is a great way to share passwords within departments and temporarily share individual credentials between departments,” Munive said.

By implementing 1Password Extended Access Management, Vitru is making significant progress in closing the Access-Trust Gap—the security risks posed by unfederated identities, unmanaged devices, applications, and AI-powered tools accessing company data without proper governance controls. By combining powerful device posture checks with seamless credential management, Virtru has embraced a secure BYOD culture without compromising privacy or productivity. Whether it’s blocking risky AI tools, enforcing software updates, or guiding employees through self-remediation, 1Password helps Virtru stay agile, compliant, and in control of its data.
