Outcomes

  • Fast, trusted sign-ins and clear ownership with shared vaults and audit trails.

  • Modern developer secrets management practices that remove plaintext credentials and speed CFD iteration.

  • Identify savings to reinvest in car development and innovation to improve on-track performance.

Oracle Red Bull Racing is a multi-time Formula 1® world champion with over 1,800 team members working across ten sites in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom, and at race circuits worldwide. The team selected 1Password to strengthen its security posture and safeguard critical secrets and information. The team operates under Formula 1® cost-cap regulations, which increases the importance of both engineering speed and financial discipline. 1Password supports faster iteration in engineering and reveals opportunities to reinvest savings into car development.

Challenges

People think F1® has unlimited money. Cost caps mean that every license must be justified. We needed to see who was using what and make smarter decisions.

  • Hyper growth and proliferation of SaaS applications. The team expanded from about 200 people in two buildings to more than 1,800 across ten, with thousands of credentials in daily use, while cost-cap constraints require clear value for every license.

  • Credential ownership and identity lifecycles. Rapid growth led to ad hoc credential sharing and limited visibility, making Joiner-Mover-Leaver (JML) events and audits challenging.

  • Developer secrets management inefficiencies. Manual credential handling and inconsistent storage led to plaintext credentials being stored in code or ad hoc files, which slowed delivery.

Back when I joined, we had 200 people in two buildings. We now have 1,800 across ten sites. Complexity exploded, and with it, the need for visibility and control.

Fast, trusted sign-ins and clear ownership with shared vaults and audit trails

Oracle Red Bull Racing deployed 1Password Enterprise Password Manager to secure everyday sign-ins across factory and trackside devices. Adoption is high, including among engineers and developers.

In Formula 1®, milliseconds matter. The 1Password browser extension generates and autofills strong passwords, reducing friction and improving security hygiene. Faster access enables engineers to initiate and repeat CFD studies more quickly, thereby accelerating aero development and bringing ideas to the car sooner.

We had strong controls in place, but usability wasn’t great. When you slow people down, they find workarounds. 1Password gave us both security and usability.

The data and workflows involved in each iteration of the car are critical information that fuels championship-winning strategies in Formula 1®. Shared vaults safeguard this information by centralizing credential sharing with clear ownership and audit trails. Admins maintain visibility into who has access and when items change, and can quickly provision, transfer, or revoke access as teams shift throughout the season. Streamlined identity lifecycles reduce risk, strengthen security posture, and free up resources to fuel innovation.

The car that starts the season isn’t the car that ends it – there are constant iterations. The data and workflows around those iterations are our crown jewels. Many applications feed into those decisions, so having controls to ensure only authorized access, with accountability and auditability, is crucial. 1Password fits into our ecosystem, complementing the tools we rely on and giving us a unified view and the metrics we need.

Modern developer practices that remove plaintext credentials

In Formula 1®, precision engineering wins races, and that precision now extends to how Oracle Red Bull Racing engineers handle secrets. Instead of storing credentials in code or ad hoc files, developers now encrypt their secrets by storing them in 1Password. Workflows such as Kubernetes deployments and CFD simulations now run with centrally stored credentials that are easy to rotate and never exposed in the clear. The result: faster delivery and stronger confidence that every key, token, and connection string is handled securely.

With 1Password, we eliminated plaintext passwords in code. Developers now use secure references, which has been revolutionary for them.

SaaS Management will identify savings to reinvest in car development and innovation

Under strict cost-cap regulations of Formula 1®, every pound spent must deliver measurable performance, which is why Oracle Red Bull Racing uses 1Password SaaS Management to uncover savings that can be reinvested in innovation on the car.

With SaaS Management (Trelica by 1Password), Oracle Red Bull Racing will gain a unified view of app usage and licensing. The team will identify underused seats, duplicate tools, and orphaned access after joiner, mover, and leaver events. These insights will guide right‑sizing and consolidation, and workflows will reclaim licenses automatically. Savings will be reinvested in car development and innovation, so more of the budget supports on‑track performance.

How it works

  • 1Password Enterprise Password Manager: central, auditable vault for credentials and MFA at scale.

  • Browser extension: generate and autofill strong passwords instantly across devices.

  • Shared vaults and granular permissions: enable the right access and clear ownership.

  • Admin visibility and activity history: review access, investigate changes, manage onboarding and offboarding.

  • Developer-friendly references and tooling: keep secrets out of code and simplify rotation.

  • Trelica by 1Password will identify underused seats and duplicates, freeing up more budget for car development.

Oracle Red Bull Racing has shown that disciplined credential management enhances both velocity and control simultaneously. Engineers sign in quickly, admins have a clear audit trail, and developers ship faster with secrets handled correctly. With 1Password, ideas move from model to car in days, turning engineering speed into on-track performance, while staying under the budget cap.
