The credentials developers rely on can also be some of the hardest for IT and security teams to see and govern. API keys end up in plaintext .env files, SSH keys live unencrypted on developer devices, and credentials get copied into CI/CD configurations because teams need to ship quickly.

AI-assisted development is expanding the number of people and workloads using secrets.
