Reports: The Family Password Paradigm

Raising digital natives: Starting on a positive note, it's great to see that parents are engaging with children about online security from a very early age. And it's just as interesting to see how parents approach using and sharing passwords with their children as they grow up. 40% of parents talk about online security with their preschool children (age 3-4). 13% of parents say they've helped a child under 5 set up a password. 47% of parents let their children use devices with saved passwords on them. 30% of parents with a high-schooler claim to know all of that child's passwords.

What you will learn

Our survey reveals how different families approach password management and sharing. Findings include:

  • Which security practices are most common among family members
  • The challenges of digital security for parents and children alike
  • Ways the security and technology industries can help families stay secure online

Sharing certain passwords with your family is both sensible and convenient, but it’s important to do so securely. Our survey shows that, alas, this isn’t always the case.
